Counselling and Consulting

‘Focus on yourself, you will be with you a long time’

Counselling with a focus on healing past hurts, and moving forward
with awakened courage, strength, and the tools to create change.

Janie Christensen, MSW, RSW

I have been a registered social worker since 1998, working in the field since 1997.  I became passionate with the field of family violence and abuse, from the onset of my first practice placement at then YWCA Sheriff King Home.  There I first learned the trades of group work, with men and with women, crisis counselling in a shelter, and in later years had the opportunity to work on manual and program development as well as supervised and managed the adult clinical programs.

Launching fully into private practice in 2011, I collaborated with Exploring Solutions in a project conducting group counselling for couples.  I have worked with men, women, and children as well as had the privilege of seeing both mandated and voluntary populations, as well as presented a number of times on subjects in the area of domestic violence, internationally and conducted webinars working with clients who have experienced abuse.

I have taught communication studies at MRU and been an expert witness in Family Court.   I carry an eclectic approach to clinical work, using primarily CBT as well as work from a trauma lens, rooted in strengths based counselling.

I fully believe that all individuals have the capacity to create tremendous change, but sometimes may be unable to see themselves fully and what needs to best change.  With the right conversations, the balanced approach of unearthing strengths, potential, I believe we all have the tools to go great places, and make lives better.  I am privileged and honoured to share in that journey with my clients.
